Dean Flewwellin’s article on the probate record of Robert L. and Elizabeth Flewellin (Probate of the Estate of Robert L. and Elizabeth Flewwellin, "Llewellyn Traces", Vol. 1, No.4, p.75; Continuing With the Probate of the Estate of Robert L. and Elizabeth Flewwellin, Vol. 2, No.1, pp. 12 to 16) provides a key to the last Flewelling problem I attempted to deal with; a summarization of the available information on the family of Robert Flewelling (ca. 1712-1768) of North Castle, Westchester Co., N. Y. To the best of my knowledge, nobody has attempted such a summary, and it is good to see that a member of that branch has taken an interest.
Robert Flewelling's son, Robert Flewwellin, Lived in Yorktown, Westchester Co., NY, and a basic theory I adopted was that those Flewwellins found in that area were his descendants. Dean Flewwellin‘s findings confirm this theory. Robert Flewwellin‘s will was made 4MAR1828, and probated 30JUN1828, and identifies his children. He married Mary Searles (or Sarles.) His family seems to have continuously used the spellings Flewwellin or Flewellin since his time, which further serves to identify his branch of the family. [Recently, I have also been made aware of the use of Flewellyn, which appears to originate in Westchester Co. as well.]
ROBERT FLEWELLIN b. 3OCT1746, d. 5JUN1828, bur. Amawalk Cemetery, Yorktown, Westchester Co., NY, will made 4MAR1828 and probated 30JUN1828, m. MARY D. SEARLES (or SARLES) (b. ca. 8FEB1755 (or 28FEB1758), d. 3(or 4)MAY1849, bur. Amawalk Cemetery, Yorktown, Westchester Co., NY), d/o John and Hannah (Ireland) Searles of Mount Pleasant.
At site at: http://hometown.aol.com/jl3bluhm/sarlsa.htm the dates for Mary Searles are: b. 28FEB1758 (from Selma Bonewald and, Searles Family Genealogy, 2nd Ed., Harry A. Howk and Lisa R. (Hurst) Robinson, Dublin, OH: Privately printed, 1996; 1st Ed. 1962, ABC Free Press, Breckenridge, TX), d. 4MAY1859.
From a site at: http://hometown.aol.com/jl3bluhm/sarlsa.htm (I don’t know how two different sites have the same URL) comes:

John SARLES
Researcher: Michael Boyer O'Leary. Michael is searching for the parents of John SARLES.
First Generation
John SARLES was born 11 May 1732 and died 27 Aug 1810 in Coxsaxie, Greene, New York. He was a Revolutionary War soldier. John SARLES married Hannah IRELAND, born 14 May 1735 in New Castle, Westchester County, New York, daughter of Adam IRELAND and Martha FOWLER. She died 20 Dec 1821 near Ravena, New York.
For John SARLES (1732-1810) and his descendants, contact HYPERLINK "mailto:mboleary@MIT.EDU?subject=Searles WWW  or view his "http://www.mit.edu/~mboleary/searls/ "John SARLES". Michael would like to hear from fellow researchers working on Sarles, Dean, and Ireland (and variant spellings) lines in New York state, especially from those who might be able to shed light on:
·    -- John1? Sarles
·    -- the ancestry of Anna Dean/e
·    -- the question of whether Hannah (Ireland) Sarles was Hannah4 (Adam3, Thomas2,1) or Hannah5 (___4, Adam3, Thomas2,1)

Joan Perkins, who provided (11FEB2001) many of the transcripts of the headstones in Westchester Co., noted that on page 45 of, Westchester County Cemeteries, on LDS microfilm reel # 17999 the transcript of the headstone of Robert and Mary.  This needs to be checked as, the transcript Joan provided reads:

Flewelling, Robert d. June 5, 1820 81 yr. 8 mo. 2 days - wife - Mary D. d. May 3, 1849, 94 yrs. 2 mo. 25 days

The date-of-death given here disagrees with the dates concerning Robert’s will. There is no doubt in as to who these are; this is the son of Robert and Maplet Flewelling, and his wife. Otherwise, all the information on the headstone agrees with notes and references gathered over the years. An exception is that I estimated from one census record his date-of-birth as 1755 ± 5 years. Knowing the frequent unreliability of census returns, even this suggests that Robert was born well after 1738, the date arrived at subtracting his age from the date-of-death given in the headstone transcription.
05 06 1820 =
05 18 1819
02 08 0081 =
02 08 0081
03 10 1738
=3OCT1738
He is said to have d. 2OCT1840 (Cathryn M. Barton’s site; see Robert G. Flewwellin [R41]), or 5MAR1828 (Long Island Genealogies.) The first of these dates simply does not make sense against the probate dates. The second date-of-death, while the day and year may be correct, does not agree with the month. The reason for this is that somebody has assumed that Robert died the day after making his will, 4MAR1828, and shows the difficulties of such assumptions. Nevertheless, this does support the correctness of the probate dates.
The dates given for Mary Searles (or Sarles) are (b. 8FEB1755 [Long Island Genealogies has ca. 1743], and d. 3(or 5)MAY1849. Norma E. Byrnes extracts from, Westchester Patriarchs, A Genealogical Dictionary of Westchester County, New York, Families Prior to 1755, by Norman Davis, that "Robert, of New Castle; m. Mary (1755-1849) d/o John & Hannah (Ireland) Searles of Mt. Pleasant." The headstone transcription gives: b. ca. 8FEB1755, d. 3MAY1849, which does seem to resolve these discrepancies where disagreement exists. One factor is that these do show that, Long Island Genealogies, while a marvellous and very useful site, is often based on dated information as far as the Flewellings go, and needs to be consulted with care.
The conclusion I have reached is that the date-of-death on Robert’s headstone has been misread, with 1820 actually being 1828, to agree with the probate dates. Those who have read old headstones know the difficulties often encountered in distinguishing between ‘8’, ‘0’, ‘6‘ and ‘3‘; and this seems very likely. This adds eight years to Robert’s date-of-birth, making him born ca. 3OCT1746 (I use ‘ca.’ because the calculation may be plus or minus a day, and, in my case, is an indication that the date-of-birth is derived from a headstone.)
The information I have on this branch of the family derives largely from census records, a couple of family Bibles, and entries in LDS records. These have been gathered by many members of the family, and I was attempting to organize them into a more coherent body of work. Additional information comes from a few biographical notices, manuscript notes, and transcribed correspondence. I apologize for not fully citing these sources. I should mention, in particular two Bibles recorded by the DAR. The Holy Bible containing Old and New Testaments with the Apocrypha, published by Jesper Harding, Philadelphia, PA, 1842, presented to the Ossining Historical Society by Reuben Sterritt, descendant of Reuben Washburn and Samantha Powell. Ossining Historical Society, Washington School, Croton Avenue, Ossining, N. Y.; DAR Bible Records Vol. 107. Also: Holy Bible dated 1807, owned by Mrs. Harry Klinger (Elizabeth Cornell), Pleasantville, Westchester Co., NY; DAR Bible Records, Vol. 85. A third Bible is: Family Bible of John Flewellin, Collins, Perkins & Co., 1807, New York; DAR Bible Records, Vol. 85. These are where some of my more specific dates come from. In these, a date might be written, "7/8/1830", which can mean 7AUG1830 or 8JUL1830. Unless internal evidence allows a solution to these ambiguities, I have uses both possibilities as 'either. .. or'. I propose, then, to take my notes, and Dean Flewwellin's findings, and compiled a summarization of Robert Flewwellin's family.
R4. ROBERT FLEWWELLIN
Robert Flewwellin was the son of Robert and Maplet (Jeacockes?) Flewelling of North Castle, Westchester Co., NY. This was a Quaker branch of the family, which may explain some movements of the family in later years.
ROBERT FLEWELLIN b. ca. 3OCT1746, d. 5JUN1828, bur. Amawalk Cemetery, Yorktown, Westchester Co., NY, will made 4MAR1828 and probated 30JUN1828, m. MARY D. SEARLES (or SARLES) (b. ca. 8FEB1755, d. 3MAY1849, bur. Amawalk Cemetery, Yorktown, Westchester Co., NY), d/o John and Hannah (Ireland) Searles of Mount Pleasant.
He lived in Yorktown, Westchester Co., NY. His children were:
R41. ROBERT G. FLEWWELLIN b. ca. 6DEC1773, d. 22SEP1810 (or 2OCT1810, possibly burial date?), bur. Fair Ridge Cem., Chappaqua, NY (Nancy Tompkins Carrasco Tompkins GenForum # 1278, 4JUN2001), m. MARTHA WRIGHT (b. ca. 27MAR1776, d. 12OCT1831, bur. Fair Ridge Cem.)
R42. JOHN FLEWWELLIN b. 15(or 10)MAY1771, d. Chappaqua, Westchester Co., NY 25(or 24)FEB1865, m. 1st Chappaqua 7(or 28)NOV1793 Esther Thorne (b. 9MAR1774, d. 12APR1824), d/o Stephen Thorne; m. 2nd 14DEC1825 Peninah Sands ( b. 28SEP1786, d. 3 NOV1858), d/o Samuel and Martha Sands
R43. EZEKIEL FLEWWELLIN b. 27JAN1779, d. 17JUN1853(or 1852), m. TAMAR WASHBURN (b. 30OCT1786, d. 21MAR1853), d/o Joseph and Freelove (Mathews)
R44. HANNAH FLEWWELLIN b. 3(or 9)SEP1781, d. 18AUG1852 (aet. 81y, 11m, 9 d), m. 1NOV1799 REUBEN WASHBURN (b. 13SEP1775 Mount Pleasant, N. Y., d. 24JUL1863), s/o Joseph and Freelove (Matthews) Washburn
R45. SARAH FLEWWELLIN m. AJAH PALMER, s/o James Palmer
R46. MARY FLEWWELLIN b. ca. 1789 ±5 yrs., m. JESSE LOUNSBERRY
R47. PHOEBE FLEWWELLIN m. RICHARD WHITSON
R48. ISAIAH FLEWWELLIN b. 26MAY1792(or 1790), d. 14SEP1857, bur Amawalk Cem., Yorktown, Westchester Co., NY ("67 yr. 3 mo. 19 days"), m. HANNAH LYON (b. 10AUG1791, d. 7APR1873, bur Amawalk Cem., Yorktown, Westchester Co., NY ("82 yr. 7 mo. 20 days")), of Rye, Westchester Co., NY
  R41. ROBERT G. FLEWWELLIN
Robert G. Flewwellin was b. ca. 1772, and had a daughter, Mary. Whether this is the same Robert, son of Robert Jr. I am not certain. In the 1810 census of Yorktown (provided, as were many of the New York and other returns, by Marian Perlot) there is a Robert Fluellen with:
1 male age 16-26
1 male over 45
1 female 10-16
1 female 16-26
1 female 26-45
At the same time there is Robert G. Fluellen with:
3 m. under 10
1 m. 26-45
2 f. under 10
1 f. 10-16
1 f. over 45
In the 1820 census of Yorktown, there are also two Roberts, one called "Robert Flewelling, Jr." suggesting that one is the son of the other.  In this census, Robert has:
3 m. under 10
1 m. 10-16
1 m. 16-26
1 m. 26-45
1 m. over 45
1 f. under 10
1 f. 26-45
1 f. over 45
suggesting grandchildren as well as children. Robert, Jr. has:
3 m. under 10
2 m. 10-16
1 m. 16-26
1 m. over 45
1 f. 16-26
1 f. over 45
In 1830 in Yorktown, there is only one Robert Flewelling with:
1 m. 10-15
1 m. 15-20
2 m. 20-30
2 m. 30-40
1 m. 50-60
1 f. 20-30
1 f. 40-50
Accepting that Robert G. Fluellen, Robert Flewelling, Jr. and the Robert of 1830 are one and the same then:
name/census
age
birth
Robert G. Fluellen/1810 26-45 1765-1784
Robert Flewelling, Jr./1820 over 45 before 1775
Robert Flewelling/1830 50-60 1770-1780
and the 1810 census gives a range of years for the date-of-birth of 1765-1784; the 1820 census excludes years after 1775, leaving a range of 1765-1775; the 1830 census excludes years before 1770, leaving 1770-1775; therefore, Robert G. Flewelling was b. ca. 1772½ ± 2½ years. This will give some idea of how Marian Perlot’s extractions lead to estimates and assumed relationships.
Nancy Tompkins Carrasco (Tompkins GenForum # 1305, 5JUL2001, # 1311, 8JUL2001) cites the headstones at Fair Ridge Cemetery in Chappaqua, NY as reading:

is an article; Non-trad Tricks How to get and keep them involved, by Anna Mari Neri, senior editorial assistant; which in part reads:

At Northern State University in South Dakota, the Nontraditional Student Association tries to hold more family events to catch the attention of potential members. Advisor Beverly Werner says NSA puts displays in the mall, sets up recruiting booths at the county fair, and has a recruiter work with local businesses to spread the word. "When we started holding events that included the family, we built more of an interest," says Dawn Flewwellin, a NSA member. "We had a pizza party which the kids loved and the moms did too because then they didn't have to cook." Flewwellin also says that the group held fund-raisers, such as a spring bake sale, to start an on-campus daycare.

Dawn Ranee (Brush) Flewwellin, who is visually impaired, was the recipient of the Delbert K. Aman Memorial Scholarship in 1996 and of an ACB Awards Scholarship in 1998. She was also on the President's Academic Achievement List at Northern State University in 2000.

is written the following:

At its 35th annual national convention at the Downtown Doubletree Hotel in Tulsa, Okla., the American Council of the Blind awarded its 1996 scholarships to 25 outstanding blind students from throughout the country. The awards were given to students in academic and professional curricula at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Hundreds of qualified blind and visually impaired students applied for these honors. Eighteen of the winners and other students were able to attend the convention with the assistance of a grant to the American Council of the Blind by the NYNEX Corporation and Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. The winners were honored on Thursday, July 4 during the convention's plenary program.

DELBERT K. AMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: Dawn Flewwellin, BS - Rehabilitation, Northern State University.

The American Council of the Blind would not be able to award these scholarships without the financial support of the Pennsylvania Council of the Blind, the Tarver Memorial Fund, National Industries for the Blind, Mr. & Mrs. Russ Pekar, Visually Impaired Data Processors International, Mrs. Audrey Hebner, the South Dakota Association of the Blind, the Commonwealth Council of the Blind, the Bay State Council of the Blind, and the ACB of Colorado.

Dawn helped organize the Centennial Reunion for the South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired which started as "The Asylum for the Blind" in March 1900 in Gary, South Dakota, but later moved its campus to the present location in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
Dean and his father provided the basis for much of the work presented here on his branch of the family, and much guidance to this work.
Dean Whitney and Dawn Flewwellin have a son:
R41214111. MICHAEL LEE FLEWWELLIN
R4122. NATHANIEL B. FLEWWELLIN
Nathaniel B. Flewwellin b. ca. 1839, m. Hannah Cornell Vail (b. 8DEC1843), d/o John and Sarah (Cornell) Vail.
It should be noted that there is potential for confusion with two other Nathaniels: [R419] and [R4137].
Nancy Tompkins Carrasco (Tompkins GenForum # 1305, 5JUL2001) writes of headstones at Fair Ridge Cemetery in Chappaqua, NY as reading:

I also found another Flewwellin grave. It's a fairly large stone:

John C.
son of
N.D.(?) & H.C.
Flewwellin
Died
May 14, 1895 (?)
Aged 26 years

I'm taking this from a photo I made of the stone and I can't be sure that it's a "9" in the 1895. I'm pretty sure of the "D' in the "N.D."; the only other thing that it could be is an "O".

Nathaniel, and the possible ‘D.’ of his middle name is reminiscent of Nathaniel Denton, more closely associated with the family of John Flewelling of Newburgh, NY. "H. C." is probably Nathaniel’s wife.
John ’n’ Rebecca posted a notice (Flewellen GenForum # 54, 13JAN2000) which in part reads:

Nathaniel Flewellen, Birth and Parentage unknown, married Hannah Vail abt 1863, Westchester co, NY (according to IGI, census records) Hannah Vail is the daughter of John Vail and Sarah Cornell, and was born Dec 8 1843,(according to the Moses Vail genealogy, pg 187)

This would presumably be the  "H. C." (Hannah Cornell) on the headstone.

Assuming I am making the correct conclusions, the son of Nathaniel and Hannah was:
R41221. JOHN C. FLEWWELLIN b. ca. 1869, d. 14MAY1895, bur. Fair Ridge Cem., Chappaqua, NY
R413. WRIGHT FLEWELLIN
Wright Flewellin b. New Castle Westchester Co., NY ca. 1800, d. Merritt’s Corner, NY ca. SEP1891, m. White Plains, Westchester Co., NY 24FEB1829 Jemima Tompkins (b. Pleasant Plains, Westchester Co., NY 9NOV1799.) In Yorktown in 1820; in New Castle in 1830 and 1850. (M. R. Eckert, Quimby GenForum # 268, 2AUG2000, ‘I have a newspaper clipping for the last will & testament of a Wright Flewellin in White Plains, N.Y.(He was my ggg-grandfather). One of the people who was to attend was Eliza F. Quimby. This is dated 10/05/1891. I also have a Methodist Hymn book presented to a Mary? Juliette? Quimby in the year 1862.’) Mal later wrote (13MAY2001) with a transcript of the newspaper clipping:

The people of the state of New York,-By the Grace of God, Free and Independent.
To Lumaree Flewellin, Charles Flewellin, Wm. N. Flewellin, Emeline Bedell, Mima Daniels, Ada Smith, Isabelle Hyatt, Georgie Williams, Eliza F. Quimby, Ida Thorn, Mary E. Gliddon, Wright Eckert, and to the creditors, legatees, next of kin and all other persons interested in the estate of WRIGHT FLEWELLIN, late of the Town of New Castle, in the County of Westchester, and the State aforesaid, deceased, send greeting:
You and each of you are hereby cited and required personally to be and appear before the surrogate of the County of Westchester, at my office in the Town of White Plains on the TWENTY-FIFTH DAY OF NOVEMBER, 1891 at ten o'clock in the forenoon of that day, then and there to attend a judicial settlement of the accounts of Wright F. Tompkins as the executive of the last Will and Testament of the said deceased.
In testimony whereof, we have caused the seal of office of our said surrogate to be hereunto affixed.
Witness, OWEN T. COFFIN, Surrogate of said County, at the Town of White Plains, the 5th of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand, eight hundred and ninety one.
F. X. Donoghue,
Clerk of the Surrogate's Court

It is clear that ‘Lumaree’, Charles and  ‘Wm. N.’ Flewellin are the sons of Wright Flewellin. Wright Eckert is his grandson, thus the others are most likely children and grandchildren. Wright F. Tompkins, however, appears to have been his nephew [R4114], s/o of  Wright Flewellin’s sister, Ann. Ada Smith doesn’t seem to fit, but she could be one of the unknown children of Wright‘s daughter, Phoebe (Flewellin) Eckert. Isabelle Hyatt is [R41332], a daughter of Phoebe Eckert. Ida Thorn may be [R413121], Wright’s great granddaughter. Eliza F. Quimby might be Francis (Hynard) Quimby [R41311]. Mary E. Gliddon could be Mary Eckert [R41333], Wright Eckert’s sister.
Mal adds, ‘I do not know which paper this came from or on what date. I believe Mima Daniels, Ada Smith, Georgie Williams and Mary E. Gliddon to be sisters of Wright Eckert and Isabelle Hyatt.’

Harvey Flewwellin d. 1902, had at least two daughters who both died between 1902 and 1909 without children. This means that the headstones in the Christian Church Cem.,  King St. and East King St., Danbury, Connecticut

may be those of his family; although the information on the is at odds with the foregoing. The inscriptions give:

(Westchester County Probate Records, Liber L, p. 182.) Aaron was in Yorktown in 1830, but in New Castle in 1850. This latter location had led me to surmise that he was a son of John Flewwellin [R42].
An extract from the 1860 census of North Castle, found at a web site dealing with the See surname, suggests the following:

SEES IN 1860 CENSUS
http://pages.preferred.com/~dsee/Census1860.html
North Castle (Westchester) NY, p. 23, 167/176

Permelia    Flewelling     58    F        $2000    $380    NY
Mary G.         "    21    F
Anna    [OAKLEY] See    85    F
John    See    60    M    Shoemaker    $800    $40
Stephen    See    58    M    Shoemaker

It is not clear if Mary G. Flewelling was a daughter or wife of one of their sons; nor is the connection to the See family. Leather working and shoemaking appear over the centuries as occupations in the Flewelling family, although a clear continuity of this occupation cannot be shown.
  His children were:

Certainly, the Hortons are from Westchester Co., and there are other connections more contemporary to the 1879 date. [Benjamin Flewwellin [R418] b. 15NOV1815, d. 26AUG1892, m. They were at Columbia, Herkimer Co, New York in 1850 and 1860 and at North Castle, Westchester Co, New York in 1870 and at Bedford, Westchester Co in 1880." They are buried in the, "Yorktown Baptist Cemetery beside the old Baptist Church on Baptist Church Road off Baldwin Road off of Underhill Road west of Yorktown Heights, NY", (Tim Mullen Quereau GenForum # 4, 21FEB2000.) R4184. JOHN FLEWWELLIN d. 1885

R4183. ROBERT ENSLOW FLEWELLIN

Robert Enslow Flewellin b. 20FEB1841, d. 1903 (1841-1903 on headstone: Tim Mullen, Flewelling GenForum # 270 and 272, 18-19JUN2001, who also provided birth and marriage dates as well as other information), bur. Amawalk Cem. Yorktown (or Amawalk), Westchester Co., NY, m. Yorktown Baptist Church 21FEB1866 (by the Rev. Edward S. Yocum, whose daughter married Harriet’s brother, Sydney Tompkins, and Sydney‘s son was the New York State Supreme Court Judge Arthur S. Tompkins of Nyack, NY) Harriett Melissa Haviland Griffin Tompkins (b. 16OCT1843, d. 1934, bur. Amawalk Cem. Yorktown, Westchester Co., NY "Harriett M. wife of Robert E."), d/o Elias Quereau and Elizabeth Haviland (Griffin) Tompkins of Yorktown, NY.
  Timothy J. Mullen (Tompkins GenForum # 504, 2SEP1999) writes:

Harriet Melissa, (1843-1934) - My grandmother, Mrs. Percy Mullen's, a.k.a., Gladys Mellor Tompkins Rich Flewellin Mullen's grandmother.
- Attended one-room school near her Father Elias' house with twin brother, Charles Edgar.
- The School teacher stayed at their home.
- She went to school in Brooklyn to take courses not offered in the country school.
- Member and later Trustee of the Yorktown Baptist Church of Christ.
- Married Robert Enslow Flewellin at Yorktown Baptist Church by Rev. Edward Yocom.
- Furnished info for an article in the local newspaper shortly before her death about life on the farm in earlier times, i.e., making candles, churning butter, canning, and making provisions for the Baptist Minister and his family.
- Heard A. Lincoln speak at Peekskill.
- Buried in the Carpenter Hill Side/Amawalk Cemetery on Quaker Church Road. The name in large letters facing the road about 3/4's of the way up the hill side is "Jennie Rich". ["Jennie Rich" would be her daughter-in-law, below.]

It would appear that the Enslow Flewellin is the same Robert Enslow Flewellin mentioned above, which raise the question of his brother, Robert M. Flewwellin. Were they one and the same? Of the article Harriet provided for a newspaper, Mr. Mullens writes:

According to a newspaper article written by my grandmother entitled "Yorktown - As It Used To Be; Mrs. Percy Mullen Remembers Its Farms - And Its Rural Folks", in 'The Yorktowner', dated July 3, 1973, the children of Elias Q. Tompkins and Elizabeth Griffin Tompkins were:

and he lists the children, including Harriet. Under her older sister, Ann [here given as Ida, but corrected in a later posting], Mr. Mullen’s writes of Harriet:

- Harriet tore her own birth date out of the family Bible and tried to appropriate Ida's because Harriet wanted to live to be one-hundred years old and she thought using her older sister's birth date would give her a head start

Mr. Mullens mentions (Tompkins GenForum # 601, 11NOV1999] a, "Tompkins Genealogy attributed to Mrs. George (Ruth E. Townsend) Purdy"; and that this is in "the Yorktown Town Hall in Yorktown, New York." Tim also refers to: Couch Genealogical Files, Field Library, Peekskill, NY and, The Yorktown Baptist Cemetery List of Interments.)
  Their only son was:

R418312. ARTHUR R. FLEWELLIN b. 30APR1895, d. 21APR1896 (Tim Mullen cites headstone, and mentions that, Tompkins Genealogy, by Ruth T. Purdy, gives ‘April 2, 1896), bur. Amawalk Cem. Yorktown, Westchester Co., NY
R418313. ROBERT M. (or W.) FLEWELLIN b. 9JAN1899, d. 19JUN1900 (Tim Mullen reporting from headstone: Tim says Purdy gives ‘b. Jan. 9, 1899 d. June 19, 1900’), bur. Amawalk Cem. Yorktown, Westchester Co., NY
R418314. STANLEY BEALE FLEWELLIN b. 29MAR1900, d. JAN1973, m. 24OCT1930 VIVA MADER
R418315. GRACE ELIZABETH ("BESS" or "BESSIE") FLEWELLIN b. 2MAR1901, m. Mt. Kisco, Westchester Co., NY (byJustice-of-the-Peace) 25AUG1934 DRATING URQUHART ("URQY") BLAYLOCK (b. Tyler, Texas 22AUG1904), s/o Elija and Ada Othela (Jetter) Blaylock; and had no children.

R418311. GLADYS MELLOR FLEWELLIN

Gladys Mellor Flewellin b. 25MAR1894, d. 1976, bur. Amawalk Cem., m. 16JUN1917 Howard Percy Mullen (b. 26AUG1893, d. 1977, bur Amawalk Cem. Amawalk, NY), s/o William Andrew and Jennie (Reyburn or Rayburn) Mullan (Mullen.) Amongst their eleven children, their son is:

R4183111. WILFRED SOBEY MULLEN m. JANE MAY FERRIS. Their son (fourth of six children) is:
R41831114. TIMOTHY JOSEPH MULLEN a source of much of the information on this part of the family.
R4183112. MABEL MULLEN

R418314. STANLEY BEALE FLEWELLING

Stanley Beale Flewellin b. 29MAR1900, d. JAN1973, bur. Evergreen Memorial Park and Garden Mausoleum, Schenectady, NY m. 24OCT1930 Viva Mader (b. 11NOV1902, d. 1996, bur. Evergreen Memorial Park and Garden Mausoleum, Schenectady, NY. [Social Security Death Index, family correspondence, and Ruth Townsend Purdy's, Tompkins Genealogy.]) Stanley has two children including a son:

R4183141. DAVID FLEWELLIN

R4184. JOHN FLEWWELLIN

John Flewwellin d. 1885. John Flewwellin, the father of:

Horace P. Flewwellin(ca. 1833-1900),
Susan L. Flewwellin(ca. 1836.:.1889),
Ophelia Flewwellin(ca. 1839-1883),
Clarissa Flewwellin(b. ca. 1843) and
Mary D. Flewwellin (b. ca. 1845);

appears in the 1850 census of New Castle. There, he is age 39, and his wife, Eliza A., is age 38. This makes it unlikely that the father of these children, b. ca. 1811, was the son of Benjamin, b. ca. 1816. Accepting that the father of these children was an heir with the others in the probate records, it seems most likely that the father of the above children was John [R416], son of Robert G. and Martha (Wright) Flewwellin. Possibly John [R4184] was confused with his uncle in the preparation of the probate report, its abstraction or transcription. It is not at all unusual for records supposedly accurate to be in error, and points out the need to double check where possible. That includes the present work.
Tim Mullen (Tompkins GenForum # 1298, 2JUL2001) states that: "To the best of my knowledge and consulting Ruth Townsend Purdy's 'Tompkins Genealogy" which is stored at the Yorktown Records Center not the Yorktown Town Hall, Benjamin and Martha Flewellin had only three children: William, Robert "Enslow" and Hosea." This means that John should not be included here, but I have done so until the confusion is dealt with by someone more knowledgeable than myself.

R419. NATHANIEL FLEWWELLIN

See Nathaniel [R4137] and Nathaniel [R4122], the notes concerning whom probably applies here, and Nathaniel probably m. Frances (b. ca. 1830), was himself b. ca. 1822.
According to the IGI, a Nathaniel Flewelling, in a census return, had a son, Francis A. Flewelling (b. ca. 1849) in New Castle. Considering the unreliability of the IGI, this was more likely his daughter. This suggests a child:

R4191. FRANCES A. FLEWWELLIN b. ca. 1849

R41J. MARY FLEWWELLIN

Mary Flewwellin d. 1871, m. 24 DEC 1823 Haines Sharlock (or Charlock), of Fishkill, NY. Her father, at the time of the marriage, was given as Robert Flewwellin Jr. of Yorktown. No surviving children or grandchildren.

Hannah Carpenter was the d/o Daniel and Leah (Bailey) Carpenter. (The family Bibles from which some of this information came used the format for dates of, 1/7/1850; which could mean either 1JUL1850 or 7JAN1850. Since these dates are probably entered by various hands at varying times, it is unclear as to whether the month is indicated first. Where this doubt exists, I give what is probably the more likely date, followed by the possible alternative. This may have been Quaker influenced; i.e. 'First day, Seventh month', as the Society of Friends did not like to use terms of Pagan origin.) Some of the information on this family is supplemented (especially with the photographs) by that at Cathryn Fahey‘s delightful site at:

R446. ELIZA JANE WASHBURN

Eliza Jane Washburn b. 6MAR1809, d. 12JAN1870 (or 24OCT1870 or 21 OCT 1870), m. 12JAN1831 John Young Haight (b. 30OCT1810, d. 16MAR1870), s/o of Samuel and Phoebe (Young) Haight.
The connections between the Haight and the Flewwellin families needs more study by someone closer to sources. The ancestry of John Young Haight is a care in point. As best as I can determine, and this is subject to verification, John's line-of-descent is something as follows:

SIMON HOYT, s/o of John and Ruth Hoyt , m. 1st 1612 DEBORAH STOWERS (b. MAY1593) , d/o Walter Stowers; m. 2nd SUSANNAH SMITH; m. 3rd SARAH (NOBLE?). A son of Simon and Sarah was:

NICHOLAS HOYT b. 11NOV1622, d. 7JUL1655, m. 12JUN1646 a widow, whose married name was SUSANNAH JOYSE (d. 4JUL1655.) Their son was:

SAMUEL HOYT b. 1MAY1647, d. SEP1712, m. SARAH. Samuel was also known as Samuel Haight, lived in Hempstead, Long Island, N. Y. in 1698, and later in Rye, Westchester Co , NY. A son was:

SAMUEL HAIGHT m. CHARITY .Their son was :

JAMES HAIGHT m. ANNA POPE. Their son was:

CALEB HAIGHT [R2A] b. 2MAY1730), d. 1MAR1820, m. 1st MAPLET "FORWELLING"; m. 2nd ANNA HOAG. Maplet was b. ca. 1731±, and d. after 1772. Maplet was a name common in the Flewelling family, apparently deriving from Maplet, the wife of Robert Flewelling of North Castle (1712-1768.) I have assumed that "Forwelling" is a mistranscription of Flewelling, and that Maplet [R2] was Robert's daughter .That Caleb Haight was a Quaker and lived in North Castle supports this; but it is only a theory as of yet. A son of Caleb and Maplet was:

SAMUEL HAIGHT [R28] b. 1768, living in 1817, m. PHOEBE YOUNG. Their son was:

JOHN YOUNG HAIGHT [R28K], who appears above.

Aside from being another connection with the Haight family, it would appear that John Young Haight and Eliza Jane Washburn were second cousins. In my numbering system Robert Flewwellin, whose family is the subject of this work, is [R4]; the fourth child of Robert Flewelling of North Castle; and Eliza would be [R446], and John is [R28K]. Having the same number of digits, they are of the same generation from their common ancestor (Robert); and since the first digits after [R] are siblings, the second digits represent first cousins, and the third digits are second cousins, this numbering system call be used to determine relationships. Sometimes, a person can have more than one number, as they are descended from an ancestor by more than one line-of-descent. (See [R413211] and [R43121]) who is his own third cousin, once removed.)
An understanding of the Haight, Hoyt, Hyatt family would appear to be useful to the genealogist studying the family of Robert Flewelling of North Castle.
With the line being continued at [R28K], the children of Eliza and John were:

R4461/R28K1. REUBEN S. HAIGHT b. 13OCT1831, d. 15MAR1877 m. 25MAR1857 CHARLOTTE KLINCK ANDERSON (b. 29NOV1834, d. DEC1911), d/o Daniel B. and Phoebe (Klinck) Anderson

At a site at, Ancestry of Bob & Mary Beth Wheeler, by Mary Beth Wheeler at:
http://www.gendex.com/users/rtwgen/mwheeler/d0005/g0000039.html
is the notation that the marriage of Benjamin Weeks (s/o Abraham and Phoebe Weeks) and Mary Sutton (d/o Robert and Sarah (Underhill) Sutton) took place in his home in 1846. The source for this is given as:

Ancestry.com, comp. Chappaqua, Westchester County, New York, Quaker Records. [database online] Provo, UT: Ancestry.com, 2000. Original data: Quaker Records: Chappaqua Monthly Meeting: Westchester County, New York: To Which is Appended Chappaqua Burial Ground, Armonk Burial Ground. U.S.: s.n., 19--.

This suggests that Barney was a Quaker, and that the above marriage was consistent with Quaker customs. The significance of the presence of the Weeks and Underhills should not go unnoticed as they are connected with the family elsewhere; including Long Island.

Dean and Milton Flewwellin asked why only Isaiah and Robert G. Flewwellin were named in the opening body of the suit, and not the other children of Robert and Mary (Sarles) Flewwellin. Since Isaiah was Robert L.'s father, he would be named, and since Robert G. was probably the eldest living member of the family, he would be considered important as a witness, and perhaps recognized as a sort of head of the extended family. Perhaps, in 1854, Isaiah and Robert G. were the only children of Robert and Mary still living.
When I first attempted summarizing the family of Robert Flewelling of North Castle, I was faced with a variety of fragments concerning people obviously closely related, but the nature of the relationship was often not evident. I was in the position of being forced to make some guesses (many of which would have been incorrect,) a situation I do not like finding myself in. Thanks to Dean and Milton, as they have provided the glue needed to put many of those fragments together. Thanks is especially due to the many persons who provided the fragments over the past two decades. This work, by no means complete, and by no means necessarily accurate, I hope it will help Dean and Milton and other descendants of Robert Flewelling continue the work which needs to be done to bring our knowledge of this branch of the Flewelling, Flewwelling, Fluelling, Flewwellin, Flewellyn, (and so on) family into focus.
