Dean Flewwellins article on the probate record of Robert L. and Elizabeth Flewellin (Probate of the Estate of Robert L. and Elizabeth Flewwellin, "Llewellyn Traces", Vol. 1, No.4, p.75; Continuing With the Probate of the Estate of Robert L. and Elizabeth Flewwellin, Vol. 2, No.1, pp. 12 to 16) provides a key to the last Flewelling problem I attempted to deal with; a summarization of the available information on the family of Robert Flewelling (ca. 1712-1768) of North Castle, Westchester Co., N. Y. To the best of my knowledge, nobody has attempted such a summary, and it is good to see that a member of that branch has taken an interest.
Robert Flewelling's son, Robert Flewwellin, Lived in Yorktown, Westchester Co., NY, and a basic theory I adopted was that those Flewwellins found in that area were his descendants. Dean Flewwellins findings confirm this theory. Robert Flewwellins will was made 4MAR1828, and probated 30JUN1828, and identifies his children. He married Mary Searles (or Sarles.) His family seems to have continuously used the spellings Flewwellin or Flewellin since his time, which further serves to identify his branch of the family. [Recently, I have also been made aware of the use of Flewellyn, which appears to originate in Westchester Co. as well.]
ROBERT FLEWELLIN b. 3OCT1746, d. 5JUN1828, bur. Amawalk Cemetery, Yorktown, Westchester Co., NY, will made 4MAR1828 and probated 30JUN1828, m. MARY D. SEARLES (or SARLES) (b. ca. 8FEB1755 (or 28FEB1758), d. 3(or 4)MAY1849, bur. Amawalk Cemetery, Yorktown, Westchester Co., NY), d/o John and Hannah (Ireland) Searles of Mount Pleasant.
At site at: http://hometown.aol.com/jl3bluhm/sarlsa.htm the dates for Mary Searles are: b. 28FEB1758 (from Selma Bonewald and, Searles Family Genealogy, 2nd Ed., Harry A. Howk and Lisa R. (Hurst) Robinson, Dublin, OH: Privately printed, 1996; 1st Ed. 1962, ABC Free Press, Breckenridge, TX), d. 4MAY1859.
From a site at: http://hometown.aol.com/jl3bluhm/sarlsa.htm (I dont know how two different sites have the same URL) comes:
John SARLES
Researcher: Michael Boyer O'Leary. Michael is searching for the parents of John SARLES.
First Generation
John SARLES was born 11 May 1732 and died 27 Aug 1810 in Coxsaxie, Greene, New York. He was a Revolutionary War soldier. John SARLES married Hannah IRELAND, born 14 May 1735 in New Castle, Westchester County, New York, daughter of Adam IRELAND and Martha FOWLER. She died 20 Dec 1821 near Ravena, New York.
For John SARLES (1732-1810) and his descendants, contact HYPERLINK "mailto:mboleary@MIT.EDU?subject=Searles WWW or view his "http://www.mit.edu/~mboleary/searls/ "John SARLES". Michael would like to hear from fellow researchers working on Sarles, Dean, and Ireland (and variant spellings) lines in New York state, especially from those who might be able to shed light on:
· -- John1? Sarles
· -- the ancestry of Anna Dean/e
· -- the question of whether Hannah (Ireland) Sarles was Hannah4 (Adam3, Thomas2,1) or Hannah5 (___4, Adam3, Thomas2,1)
Joan Perkins, who provided (11FEB2001) many of the transcripts of the headstones in Westchester Co., noted that on page 45 of, Westchester County Cemeteries, on LDS microfilm reel # 17999 the transcript of the headstone of Robert and Mary. This needs to be checked as, the transcript Joan provided reads:
Flewelling, Robert d. June 5, 1820 81 yr. 8 mo. 2 days - wife - Mary D. d. May 3, 1849, 94 yrs. 2 mo. 25 days
The date-of-death given here disagrees with the dates concerning Roberts will. There is no doubt in as to who these are; this is the son of Robert and Maplet Flewelling, and his wife. Otherwise, all the information on the headstone agrees with notes and references gathered over the years. An exception is that I estimated from one census record his date-of-birth as 1755 ± 5 years. Knowing the frequent unreliability of census returns, even this suggests that Robert was born well after 1738, the date arrived at subtracting his age from the date-of-death given in the headstone transcription.

He is said to have d. 2OCT1840 (Cathryn M. Bartons site; see Robert G. Flewwellin [R41]), or 5MAR1828 (Long Island Genealogies.) The first of these dates simply does not make sense against the probate dates. The second date-of-death, while the day and year may be correct, does not agree with the month. The reason for this is that somebody has assumed that Robert died the day after making his will, 4MAR1828, and shows the difficulties of such assumptions. Nevertheless, this does support the correctness of the probate dates.
The dates given for Mary Searles (or Sarles) are (b. 8FEB1755 [Long Island Genealogies has ca. 1743], and d. 3(or 5)MAY1849. Norma E. Byrnes extracts from, Westchester Patriarchs, A Genealogical Dictionary of Westchester County, New York, Families Prior to 1755, by Norman Davis, that "Robert, of New Castle; m. Mary (1755-1849) d/o John & Hannah (Ireland) Searles of Mt. Pleasant." The headstone transcription gives: b. ca. 8FEB1755, d. 3MAY1849, which does seem to resolve these discrepancies where disagreement exists. One factor is that these do show that, Long Island Genealogies, while a marvellous and very useful site, is often based on dated information as far as the Flewellings go, and needs to be consulted with care.
The conclusion I have reached is that the date-of-death on Roberts headstone has been misread, with 1820 actually being 1828, to agree with the probate dates. Those who have read old headstones know the difficulties often encountered in distinguishing between 8, 0, 6 and 3; and this seems very likely. This adds eight years to Roberts date-of-birth, making him born ca. 3OCT1746 (I use ca. because the calculation may be plus or minus a day, and, in my case, is an indication that the date-of-birth is derived from a headstone.)
The information I have on this branch of the family derives largely from census records, a couple of family Bibles, and entries in LDS records. These have been gathered by many members of the family, and I was attempting to organize them into a more coherent body of work. Additional information comes from a few biographical notices, manuscript notes, and transcribed correspondence. I apologize for not fully citing these sources. I should mention, in particular two Bibles recorded by the DAR. The Holy Bible containing Old and New Testaments with the Apocrypha, published by Jesper Harding, Philadelphia, PA, 1842, presented to the Ossining Historical Society by Reuben Sterritt, descendant of Reuben Washburn and Samantha Powell. Ossining Historical Society, Washington School, Croton Avenue, Ossining, N. Y.; DAR Bible Records Vol. 107. Also: Holy Bible dated 1807, owned by Mrs. Harry Klinger (Elizabeth Cornell), Pleasantville, Westchester Co., NY; DAR Bible Records, Vol. 85. A third Bible is: Family Bible of John Flewellin, Collins, Perkins & Co., 1807, New York; DAR Bible Records, Vol. 85. These are where some of my more specific dates come from. In these, a date might be written, "7/8/1830", which can mean 7AUG1830 or 8JUL1830. Unless internal evidence allows a solution to these ambiguities, I have uses both possibilities as 'either. .. or'. I propose, then, to take my notes, and Dean Flewwellin's findings, and compiled a summarization of Robert Flewwellin's family. |

ROBERT FLEWWELLIN |
Robert Flewwellin was the son of Robert and Maplet (Jeacockes?) Flewelling of North Castle, Westchester Co., NY. This was a Quaker branch of the family, which may explain some movements of the family in later years.
ROBERT FLEWELLIN b. ca. 3OCT1746, d. 5JUN1828, bur. Amawalk Cemetery, Yorktown, Westchester Co., NY, will made 4MAR1828 and probated 30JUN1828, m. MARY D. ROBERT G. FLEWWELLIN |
Robert G. Flewwellin was b. ca. 1772, and had a daughter, Mary. Whether this is the same Robert, son of Robert Jr. I am not certain. In the 1810 census of Yorktown (provided, as were many of the New York and other returns, by Marian Perlot) there is a Robert Fluellen with:
1 male age 16-26
1 male over 45
1 female 10-16
1 female 16-26
1 female 26-45 |
At the same time there is Robert G. Fluellen with:
3 m. under 10
1 m. 26-45
2 f. under 10
1 f. 10-16
1 f. over 45 |
In the 1820 census of Yorktown, there are also two Roberts, one called "Robert Flewelling, Jr." suggesting that one is the son of the other. In this census, Robert has:
3 m. under 10
1 m. 10-16
1 m. 16-26
1 m. 26-45
1 m. over 45
1 f. under 10
1 f. 26-45
1 f. over 45 |
suggesting grandchildren as well as children. Robert, Jr. has:
3 m. under 10
2 m. 10-16
1 m. 16-26
1 m. over 45
1 f. 16-26
1 f. over 45 |
In 1830 in Yorktown, there is only one Robert Flewelling with:
1 m. 10-15
1 m. 15-20
2 m. 20-30
2 m. 30-40
1 m. 50-60
1 f. 20-30
1 f. 40-50 |
Accepting that Robert G. Fluellen, Robert Flewelling, Jr. and the Robert of 1830 are one and the same then:

and the 1810 census gives a range of years for the date-of-birth of 1765-1784; the 1820 census excludes years after 1775, leaving a range of 1765-1775; the 1830 census excludes years before 1770, leaving 1770-1775; therefore, Robert G. Flewelling was b. ca. 1772½ ± 2½ years. This will give some idea of how Marian Perlots extractions lead to estimates and assumed relationships.
Nancy Tompkins Carrasco (Tompkins GenForum # 1305, 5JUL2001, # 1311, 8JUL2001) cites the headstones at Fair Ridge Cemetery in Chappaqua, NY as reading:

Pooped!" Dean is working on a, Non-Traditional Students Survivor's Handbook, at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD
At a site:
http://www.studentleader.com/sl_2b.htm
is an article; Non-trad Tricks How to get and keep them involved, by Anna Mari Neri, senior editorial assistant; which in part reads:
At Northern State University in South Dakota, the Nontraditional Student Association tries to hold more family events to catch the attention of potential members. Advisor Beverly Werner says NSA puts displays in the mall, sets up recruiting booths at the county fair, and has a recruiter work with local businesses to spread the word. "When we started holding events that included the family, we built more of an interest," says Dawn Flewwellin, a NSA member. "We had a pizza party which the kids loved and the moms did too because then they didn't have to cook." Flewwellin also says that the group held fund-raisers, such as a spring bake sale, to start an on-campus daycare.
Dawn Ranee (Brush) Flewwellin, who is visually impaired, was the recipient of the Delbert K. Aman Memorial Scholarship in 1996 and of an ACB Awards Scholarship in 1998. She was also on the President's Academic Achievement List at Northern State University in 2000.
At a site called, Funds to 25 Outstanding Blind Students, by Jessica L. Beach, "The Braille Forum", Vol. XXXV September 1996 No. 2, published by The American Council of the Blind, Washington, DC, found at:
http://www.acb.org/Magazine/1996/sep/bf099605.html
is written the following:
At its 35th annual national convention at the Downtown Doubletree Hotel in Tulsa, Okla., the American Council of the Blind awarded its 1996 scholarships to 25 outstanding blind students from throughout the country. The awards were given to students in academic and professional curricula at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Hundreds of qualified blind and visually impaired students applied for these honors. Eighteen of the winners and other students were able to attend the convention with the assistance of a grant to the American Council of the Blind by the NYNEX Corporation and Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. The winners were honored on Thursday, July 4 during the convention's plenary program.
DELBERT K. AMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: Dawn Flewwellin, BS - Rehabilitation, Northern State University.
The American Council of the Blind would not be able to award these scholarships without the financial support of the Pennsylvania Council of the Blind, the Tarver Memorial Fund, National Industries for the Blind, Mr. & Mrs. Russ Pekar, Visually Impaired Data Processors International, Mrs. Audrey Hebner, the South Dakota Association of the Blind, the Commonwealth Council of the Blind, the Bay State Council of the Blind, and the ACB of Colorado.
Dawn helped organize the Centennial Reunion for the South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired which started as "The Asylum for the Blind" in March 1900 in Gary, South Dakota, but later moved its campus to the present location in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
Dean and his father provided the basis for much of the work presented here on his branch of the family, and much guidance to this work.

NATHANIEL B. FLEWWELLIN |
Nathaniel B. Flewwellin b. ca. 1839, m. Hannah Cornell Vail (b. 8DEC1843), d/o John and Sarah (Cornell) Vail.
It should be noted that there is potential for confusion with two other Nathaniels: [R419] and [R4137].
Nancy Tompkins Carrasco (Tompkins GenForum # 1305, 5JUL2001) writes of headstones at Fair Ridge Cemetery in Chappaqua, NY as reading:
I also found another Flewwellin grave. It's a fairly large stone:
John C.
son of
N.D.(?) & H.C.
Flewwellin
Died
May 14, 1895 (?)
Aged 26 years
I'm taking this from a photo I made of the stone and I can't be sure that it's a "9" in the 1895. I'm pretty sure of the "D' in the "N.D."; the only other thing that it could be is an "O".
Nathaniel, and the possible D. of his middle name is reminiscent of Nathaniel Denton, more closely associated with the family of John Flewelling of Newburgh, NY. "H. C." is probably Nathaniels wife.
John n Rebecca posted a notice (Flewellen GenForum # 54, 13JAN2000) which in part reads:
Nathaniel Flewellen, Birth and Parentage unknown, married Hannah Vail abt 1863, Westchester co, NY (according to IGI, census records) Hannah Vail is the daughter of John Vail and Sarah Cornell, and was born Dec 8 1843,(according to the Moses Vail genealogy, pg 187)
This would presumably be the "H. C." (Hannah Cornell) on the headstone.
Assuming I am making the correct conclusions, the son of Nathaniel and Hannah was: |

WRIGHT FLEWELLIN |
Wright Flewellin b. New Castle Westchester Co., NY ca. 1800, d. Merritts Corner, NY ca. SEP1891, m. White Plains, Westchester Co., NY 24FEB1829 Jemima Tompkins (b. Pleasant Plains, Westchester Co., NY 9NOV1799.) In Yorktown in 1820; in New Castle in 1830 and 1850. (M. R. Eckert, Quimby GenForum # 268, 2AUG2000, I have a newspaper clipping for the last will & testament of a Wright Flewellin in White Plains, N.Y.(He was my ggg-grandfather). One of the people who was to attend was Eliza F. Quimby. This is dated 10/05/1891. I also have a Methodist Hymn book presented to a Mary? Juliette? Quimby in the year 1862.) Mal later wrote (13MAY2001) with a transcript of the newspaper clipping:
The people of the state of New York,-By the Grace of God, Free and Independent.
To Lumaree Flewellin, Charles Flewellin, Wm. N. Flewellin, Emeline Bedell, Mima Daniels, Ada Smith, Isabelle Hyatt, Georgie Williams, Eliza F. Quimby, Ida Thorn, Mary E. Gliddon, Wright Eckert, and to the creditors, legatees, next of kin and all other persons interested in the estate of WRIGHT FLEWELLIN, late of the Town of New Castle, in the County of Westchester, and the State aforesaid, deceased, send greeting:
You and each of you are hereby cited and required personally to be and appear before the surrogate of the County of Westchester, at my office in the Town of White Plains on the TWENTY-FIFTH DAY OF NOVEMBER, 1891 at ten o'clock in the forenoon of that day, then and there to attend a judicial settlement of the accounts of Wright F. Tompkins as the executive of the last Will and Testament of the said deceased.
In testimony whereof, we have caused the seal of office of our said surrogate to be hereunto affixed.
Witness, OWEN T. COFFIN, Surrogate of said County, at the Town of White Plains, the 5th of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand, eight hundred and ninety one.
F. X. Donoghue,
Clerk of the Surrogate's Court
It is clear that Lumaree, Charles and Wm. N. Flewellin are the sons of Wright Flewellin. Wright Eckert is his grandson, thus the others are most likely children and grandchildren. Wright F. Tompkins, however, appears to have been his nephew [R4114], s/o of Wright Flewellins sister, Ann. Ada Smith doesnt seem to fit, but she could be one of the unknown children of Wrights daughter, Phoebe (Flewellin) Eckert. Isabelle Hyatt is [R41332], a daughter of Phoebe Eckert. Ida Thorn may be [R413121], Wrights great granddaughter. Eliza F. Quimby might be Francis (Hynard) Quimby [R41311]. Mary E. Gliddon could be Mary Eckert [R41333], Wright Eckerts sister.
Mal adds, I do not know which paper this came from or on what date. I believe Mima Daniels, Ada Smith, Georgie Williams and Mary E. Gliddon to be sisters of Wright Eckert and Isabelle Hyatt.
